Wedding Planning: How to Save Money

With today's economy, everyone is worried about job security and how they are going to live, never mind planning a wedding... Well, I am here to tell you, planning a wedding can still be done!

There are so many money saving tips when it comes to wedding planning, in fact I don't see how couples are still spending so much, when everywhere you look there is a money saving way to do everything you need to, when it comes to planning a wedding! So here are our top 5 money saving tips.

1. Venue & Meal
While every couple wants the perfect wedding day, venue & meal you might just need to compromise a bit. If you want the elaborate venue, cut back on the meal a bit. Guests just don't eat like they used to. Today, everyone is watching their weight and overall health so they just don't eat as much, so use this to your advantage. Try a menu something like this:

  • antipasto
  • soup or pasta
  • chicken or beef or fish with rice, veggies & potatoes
  • salad
  • dessert (pastries or ice cream or wedding cake)small sweet table at 11pm with just fruit & pastries
(By European standards this is a very small meal...trust me!) Or you can remove the sweet table all together or omit dessert & offer it at 11pm sweet table.

2. Wedding Invitations
While wedding invitations are a very large part of the planning process, as the invitations give your guests a feel as to what style wedding you are having. For example, more simple invitations give the feel of a more relaxed & simple reception, while a more elaborately decorated invitation with a cursive font tells guests that your wedding will be a formal one. So you will need to decide what type of wedding you will want to have & choose your invitations accordingly.

The biggest piece of advice that I can give you & will stress over & over again is the number one way to save money on the cost of your invitations is on QUANTITY! I cannot stress this enough! I have been helping couples for over 7 years & almost 90% of couples think they need as many invitations as the number of people on their guest list! WRONG! Aunt Joan & Uncle Bob are married to each other & require only 1 invitation! Yes, they are 2 people for the meal & for the number of chairs you will need, but they are only 1 invitation! So a quick rule of thumb, take your guest list & cut the number in half, as that is usually the number of invitations you need. Of course you should go through the list as sometimes there are a few singles in there so you may need a few extra.

The other piece of advice I can't stress enough is to always order a few extra! I know you are trying to save money on wedding invitations, but believe me, when you are ordering invitations look at how much an extra 10 or 25 invites cost...Not as much as you think! Sometimes an extra 25 invites can cost as little as $2 - $5. Yup, that's it, so order them at the time you place your order, if you don't, I promise you will kick yourself if you need the extra. An extra 25 can cost you close to your original order, because now the press needs to be set up again, proofs need to be done again, shipping...you get the picture. So always order a few extra wedding invitations! Mistakes happen when addressing, spelling or even drinks get spilled...believe me things happen! I had a bride order wedding invitations from me very early since she was trying to spread out her purchases so her bank account wouldn't feel so crushed as it got close to the wedding. Anyway, she stored them in the basement & in the spring there was leak in her basement & her invitations were ruined! You guessed it! New ones needed to be ordered!

Also, DIY (Do It Yourself) is huge and there are tones of styles to choose from, but there are more cost effective ways to purchase wedding invitations without having to do all the work yourself! Check out http://www.finallythebride.com/ for invitations that start as low as $36.90 for 100 quantity as well as a 20% site discount on all invitation orders!

3. Wedding Favors
A wedding favor is a small token of thanks that your guests will take home as a remembrance of your wedding. Keep these things in mind when choosing a wedding favor:
  • usefulness
  • ease of transport
As many couples think that a favor should be a useless trinket or an edible delight, think about your guests and what they would or could use. Useful favors are always a hit! If it were you receiving the favor, what would you like better? A thoughtless bag of almond candy or a set of useful coasters or a pizza cutter?

Do these options sound expensive? WRONG! They're not! You just need to know where to shop! There are many website out there that are dedicated to saving couples money in wedding planning. Take our site http://www.finallythebride.com/, where that is all we do! We find the most reputable suppliers & the best prices & pass the saving on to you. Check out the hundreds of favors we carry at http://www.finallythebride.com/wedding-favors.

4. Wedding Accessories
Wedding accessories are things like wedding garters, wedding guest books & pens, wedding toasting glasses, ring bearer pillows, flower girl baskets, wedding unity candles... you get the idea. Well, you can save here too! You need:
Everything else is optional. If you don't have a flower girl or ring bearer, then you just saved on those 2 items. Not having a unity ceremony, then don't get the candles or the sand glasses, you know where I am going with this. You can save on all of these items, just get what you absolutely need!

5. Tiaras, Veils & Jewellery
Every bride wants to be a princess on their wedding day but most of us don't have the "princess bank account"! Be smart! Shop smart! Buy the dress of your dreams but don't let them sell you on the $200 tiara, $300 veil and $600 jewellery. You can find the same items for sooooo much less! Look online at http://www.finallythebride.com/! Wedding Tiaras from $28.99, Wedding Veils from $28.00 and Wedding Jewellery sets from $18.99!

Jewish Wedding Ceremonies

Near the end of the traditional Jewish Wedding Ceremony, it is customary that a glass, contained in a decorative pouch, is placed on the floor. Those in attendance respond with an enthusiastic “Mazel Tov”!

Purchase you Jewish Glass Breaking Pouch – Malel Tov! With Star of David embroidery and begin a family tradition. Pass down the pouch to future children, grandchildren and great grandchildren! Do the same with our Traditional Jewish Bride & Groom hand painted porcelain cake topper!

Wedding Blunders – Little things that can Make or Break your wedding Day Look!

Artificial Eyelashes –
Adding extra glam to your eyes can really make your look. But be careful – there are a right way & a wrong way to apply these. Have the applied professionally or practice ahead of time or you’ll be loosing them before your day begins.

Hair “Wings” –
Although subtle, no one wants to look ready for take off! Tame those locks with tighter curls or a get to smooth fly-aways.

Bronzer –
Arguably, most brides want a little sun-kissed color on their wedding day, but orange is only chic in fashion & home décor. Test your bronzers & self tanners well in advance to avoid color clash.

Rosy Cheeks-
A rosy cheek is flattering on every girl but be careful not to overdo it. If all they see are your cheeks you know you’ve gone to far.

Lip Liner –
When it comes to lip liner, contrast is NOT a good thing. Lip line & blend with a matching lipstick so the two colors merge seamlessly.

Bobby Pins-
Black bobby pins and blonde hair DO NOT GO TOGETHER! EVER! Use pins that closely match your hair color so they are not visible. If this isn’t possible then try a sparkly barrette!

Wedding Planning Tips from Brides & their Mom’s!

1. Start planning early! Leave yourself plenty of time to research & order.
2. Make a timeline & stick to it! Or use a Wedding Planner Book or print out (see our free wedding planning post on April 25th, 2009).
3. Let your family & friends help.
4. If you don’t like it, don’t do it! Don’t let family & friends talk you into things you are not sure about or simply don’t like.
5. Keep a journal & memory box capturing experiences, emails between family & friends, cards, invitations and special mementos.

Remember the wedding isn’t just about one person. Include the groom (as long as he wants to be included . . . pushing him won’t make him happy & it won’t make your wedding planning experience a happy one!)

TIP: If the groom doesn’t want to participate, ask your mom, mother-in-law to be, maid of honour / matron of honour, bridesmaid(s), sister, friend, cousin . . . don’t be discouraged if he doesn’t want to take part in the planning. Wedding planning doesn’t interest every man & it doesn’t mean that the wedding isn’t important to him! He just may not want to be involved in the many tasks involved in planning the wedding. Include him where he wants to be included & do the rest with everyone else! After years of assisting brides in wedding planning, notice I said brides not couples, most times the bride does all the research & brings him back when she’s got it narrowed down to what she likes. Most times the groom just wants the bride to be happy! Many, many times I never even met the groom!

Bridal Jewellery Trends

Today's wedding jewelry trends span many styles and themes. Brides, wedding party members, family, and guests are using wedding celebrations as special opportunities to get creative with personal adornment.

Earrings, necklaces and bracelets designed for wedding-wear are often styled to complement the whites and ivories of traditional wedding dresses. But wedding jewelry can also be used to enhance the personalized theme of a wedding, or even to match carefully-placed color accents on a bridal gown. And since it's becoming popular for brides and their party to change outfits between the wedding and reception there's often a need for two distinct sets of jewelry for one wedding day.

Here are some of this year's most popular wedding jewelry trends:

Chandeliers - The chandelier earring styles we've grown to love for everyday-jewelry make dramatic wedding trends when adorned with pearls or crystals. Chandeliers can also take the form of elegant necklace stations or pendants.

20th Century vintage - The romantic styles of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s - from Art Deco to Old Holywood - are perfect for any elegant wedding, not just themed ceremonies. Look for sparkling faceted stones and quality vintage glass beads.

Drapey drops and multiple layers - Many brides will take advantage of the bold, multi-layer necklace look this year. We'll see lots of drapey strands, often surrounding eye-catching centerpieces. Layers may be adorned with pearls, crystal beads, and even less-traditional materials like mother-of-pearl or moonstone gemstones.

Contemporary pearls - Pearls of all shapes and sizes are everywhere this year, and they're readily available in non-traditional, dyed colors in addition to classic creams and whites. Some brides are adding color accents to their wedding gowns, and colorful pearls can be beautiful matching accompaniments.

Hair jewelry and tiaras - Tiaras and other jeweled hair accents are popular feminine favorites worn not only by brides, but by their wedding parties and guests as well. Traditional tiaras are crafted from wire, beads, crystals, and rhinestones. Jeweled Combs and beaded hair pins are also available for a more subtle look. For the bride and her party wearing updos, specialty hair picks can add a fun and unique finishing touch.

Ribbon-band watches - No one wants to arrive late to a wedding - especially not to her own! Today there are lots of fabulous watch styles that make very appropriate wedding wear. For example, the trendy new ribbon watches are feminine, a little bit formal, and can be matched to a wedding's color theme. Vintage style and true-vintage metal watches, some adorned with dainty rhinestones, also make beautiful wedding day accents.

Bridal Tiaras & Jewellery

Bridal tiaras are stylish and elegant and the perfect way to complete your wedding attire. When worn correctly, they can look tasteful and timeless and of course, make you look just like the princess you have always wanted to be on your wedding day. When the right one is selected, it is amazing how the tiara can transform a simple wedding dress into a beautiful one. But before you go and simply pluck any tiara which looks beautiful on the shelf, remember that just like everything else about your wedding look, there are certain rules every bride needs to bear in mind when selecting her wedding tiara.
Now, because you want to look like a beautiful, sophisticated and dignified woman on your wedding day and not like someone who went overboard with the wedding setup, your bridal tiara should help to accomplish this look. You want your guests to look at you on that day and say, “Wow! She looks stunning! Everything looks perfect on her” and not “Oh my goodness! What was she thinking?”
So ensure that you select one which looks natural with your wedding outfit and not over the top. Be mindful of what bridal jewellery (and be sure that your accessories compliment your dress) you are going to wear on that day and select a tiara that will compliment them. It is also important that bridal tiaras compliments the shape of your face and suits the hairstyle you will have on that day. This is an important tip to be mindful of, because the tiara should flaunt the very best of yourself and not overwhelm you completely. When it compliments your face shape and hairstyle, the tiara can enhance your best features. You want people to be focused on you, and not be drawn to the top of your head by something that looks like it doesn’t belong there.
The bridal tiara you are going to wear should be simple, and yet look stylish and tasteful. You don’t necessarily have to follow all the “it” trends that are currently going on at the moment because your wedding pictures are going to last a lifetime. You wouldn’t want to look back in a few years and look out of date, would you? Absolutely not, so simple elegance is the best approach.
You should aim to be able to carry off your bridal tiara with elegance. Again do not be tempted to go for a similar tiara to the one you may have seen your favorite celebrity, or someone you admire, wear. Just like how every individual is unique, there is no such thing as a one tiara fits all concept. Just because your favorite celeb looks beautiful wearing a certain type of tiara, it does not mean that you could necessarily pull off the same look. What looks good on one person might not on another. So choose a tiara that suits you best, not something that looks good on someone else.
Bridal tiaras are usually made of material such as rhinestones, crystals and pearls. And like the dress and other bridal jewellery, they too come in all sorts of shapes, designs and styles. Some tiaras are short or medium while others are tall. Some come in the shape of headbands or hairpins, while others are comb shaped. Some tiaras can be antique, while some can be designed to look like crowns.
It may be confusing at first trying to follow so many different rules, which is why the tiara should be one of the last few items to be selected. Once you have confirmed what dress, accessories and hairstyle you are going to go with on your wedding day, it is really not that difficult to know what to look for. Remember that everything about your ensemble should flow well together, creating a timeless, classy, elegant and beautiful effect. So have it down exactly what you want on your wedding day, how you want to look, what you are going to wear, what jewelry and hairstyle you want and you are well on your way to selecting a beautiful tiara for the finishing touch. Just be sure you don’t change your mind about anything halfway through!

The Perfect Veil for You!

You have found the dress...so now what is next? Accessorize your dress with the perfect wedding veil! With wedding veils now becoming more elaborate, it is harder to determine which one will look best with your wedding gown. The veil is a wedding accessory. It should not be the main focal point of your bridal ensemble. Here are some tips for buying the perfect wedding veil:

1. Less is more. If there is heavy embroidery / embellishments all over the back of the veil, it will cover the back of the gown. If the gown has a corset back or an elaborate train, you want to select a wedding veil that has little or no embellishment. The beautiful details at the back of your gown will easily be seen through the plain, pencil or satin cord edge veil.

2. Plain veils look good with any tiara or bridal jewelry. If you like "bling" then wearing a plain veil will allow you to wear a more stunning tiara and choose bolder jewelry such as chandelier earrings. If you select an embroidered veil, then you will have to choose a simpler tiara as a large rhinestone tiara and busy veil will overpower your face.

3. Elaborate veils look best with plain wedding gowns. A strapless, matte satin wedding gown, a style that has been popular for the past 10 years, will look perfect with a more elaborate wedding veil. The elaborate edging of the veil will fall over the bare arms and embellish the plain back of the wedding gown.

Wedding veils trends will continue to be bolder and more elaborate in years to come. But as wedding gowns move on from the minimalist styles of the past decade, less elaborate wedding veils, such as plain, pencil edge and satin cord edge veils are a smarter choice.

Now that you have decided on the detail of your veil, you need to choose a length. The most popular lengths are listed below:

  • Shoulder: This shorter style, which hits the shoulder, will give you a playful, flirty look. It's most appropriate for daytime weddings and looks best with a simple gown with clean lines, a minidress, or a wedding suit.

  • Elbow:length: As the name implies, this veil reaches just to your elbow. It's a sweet, simple style that can work with virtually any wedding gown, although you should pick something a bit longer for a formal evening wedding.

  • Fingertip: A veil that falls to your fingertips when your arms lie straight along your sides, this length is perfect for the indecisive bride -- it's dressier than shorter styles but doesn't have all the drama of longer ones.

  • Cathedral: Think Princess Diana -- yards of tulle extending down the aisle behind you. This is the choice of brides who want to feel like royalty, but keep in mind that it's not a low-maintenance look. You'll need at least one bridesmaid or flower girl to tend to your veil as you enter and exit the ceremony. It looks most appropriate in a grand church or other house of worship, and works only if the aisle you're walking down is a long one.

Whatever your choice of wedding veil may be, remember that the wedding veil is an accessory to your biggest purchase...the dress! Simple is best!

A Green Wedding

Choosing to go green for your wedding can be easier than you think. Try incorporating items that have longevity. Choose a cake topper that you'll love to use again after your wedding over. This can be the same with flutes, serving sets or any other table items.

Give out gifts of small trees or cards with embedded flower seeds and have your guests plant these in your honor - it's a nice token of appreciation and you will add a little life to our world. Other choices can be both green & nostalgic. Re-appropriate old china from family, friends or your neighborhood thrift store. Eclectic is in and mixing items from the past can be very fashionable. Or create invitations, menus or table markers out of recycled paper. Try a local printer and see if you can salvage any "off cuts" or scraps of paper.

Growing your own flowers can be green & save you a little at the same time. Or ask family and neighbors if you can gather a few flower gems from their gardens. Lilacs are a great choice and would add a beautiful aroma to your room.

It's easy to take the green step - even if it's a small one!

Some traditions are rooted in superstition and closely connected with good and bad luck. One superstition proports that it is bad luck for a groom to see his bride on their wedding day. Another, also well know superstition is the tradition of "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a lucky sixpence in her shoe." This most familiar of wedding-related sayings dates back to Victorian times."Something Old" symbolizes the connection the bride will maintain to her family and the past. Many brides abide by this tradition by choosing to wear an heirloom piece of family jewelry or the wedding gown belonging to a grand mother or mother."Something New" connotes good fortune and success in the bride's new life. The wedding dress is most often the chosen new item. "Something Borrowed" serves to remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her whenever she may need their support or assistance. The borrowed object can be most anything of her choosing, such as an antique handkerchief, an item of jewelry or a handbag. "Something Blue" denotes faithfulness and loyalty. The symbolism dates back to biblical times when blue represented purity and constancy. Brides often choose to wear a blue garter to keep with this tradition, or, blue ribbons in their hair to symbolize fidelity. "A Silver Sixpence in her Shoe" represents the wishes of loved ones to the bride, in the hope that she will have both financial security and happiness.

The History of the Flower Girl

The flower girl and the tradition of walking before the bride and tossing petals date back to old English tradition. It was customary then that the entire bridal party would walk behind a small girl as she tossed flowers . . . all the way to the church.

The History of the Wedding Cake

A wedding cake is the traditional centerpiece at the wedding reception. You might find it interesting that originally, the cake was not eaten by, but thrown at the bride! It developed as one of the many fertility traditions surrounding a wedding. Ancient Romans believed that wheat and barley were symbols of fertility and so, wedding cakes included one or both of these ingredients. Incidentally, wheat was among the earliest grains (predating rice) to be ceremoniously showered on the bride and groom. In its earliest origins, the unmarried young women attending the wedding were expected to scramble for the grains to ensure their own betrothals, much as they do today for the bridal bouquet. Somewhere around 100 B.C.E., Roman bakers began creating small, sweet cakes with it. The tradition of pelting the bride, or breaking it over her head, died hard. The Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius in "On the Nature of Things" ("De Rerum Natura") wrote that the throwing tradition mellowed into a custom of crumbling the sweet, wheat cakes over the bride's head. As a further symbol of fertility, the couple was required to eat some of the crumbs, a custom known as "confarreato," translated into "eating together." After all the cakes were used up, the guests were supplied with handfuls of "confetto," a sweet meats mixture of nuts, dried fruit, and honeyed almonds. The tradition of eating the crumbs of the wheat, sweet meat cakes spread throughout Europe. In England the tradition "broadened" to include the practice of washing down the cakes with a special ale called "bryd ealu," translated as "bride's ale," words that eventually became the word "bridal."

There are many stories of the origin of a bride's veil. Some say that the veil was introduced in ancient Rome. People of that era believed that evil spirits would be attracted to the bride, so they covered her face with a veil in order to conceal her features and confuse them. The definition of veil is to "obscure, shroud, mask or cover, so perhaps that is how the bridal "veil" got its name.
It's also said the in medieval times, the veil was used to protect her from "the evil eye" and was a symbol of purity, chastity, and modesty.
Others say the the origin of the bridal veil was due to the circumstances of an arranged marriage. In days past, men bargained with an eligible young lady's father for their hand in marriage. AFTER the ceremony, the veil was lifted to reveal the brides features. This was to keep a groom from backing out of the deal if he didn't like what he saw.
Some say that the veil was used in days past as a symbol of a bride's submission and willingness to obey her husband.
Certain lengths of bridal veils got their names from how or where they were worn. At one time, Cathedral Veils were only worn in wedding that took place in cathedrals.
Well, times have changed the meaning of the tradition of wearing a bridal veil! Now, wearing a bridal veil:
signifies a special event - A Wedding!
signifies joy
highlights the bride's appearance and features
is the final crowning touch! Bridal Gowns are transformed with the addition of a veil.
The past history of wearing a bridal veil has given way to new traditions. Over the past 20 years, traditions surrounding the bridal veil have changed even more. Veils were worn more frequently over the face (a blusher). Now, you don't have to wear if over your face all all if you don't want to.
Brides of our day are making their own wedding veil history! Star Jones of the popular Television show "The View" wore a 27' FOOT long Veil--the longest known veil in history. It's dubbed the "Star Cathedral Veil". Her veil was two feet longer than Princess Diana's Bridal Veil.
It also used to be that brides marrying for the second time were not supposed to wear a veil, especially a white veil. Nowadays, it's perfectly acceptable to wear a veil (even a white one) for a second marriage if you want to! (Don't let anyone try to tell you different. It's YOUR day! If you want to wear it, go ahead!)
The wearing of a bridal gown and veil is one of the big days in a woman's life--Choose what YOU feel comfortable in and enjoy your special day! Choose from a variety of styles at http://www.finallythebride.com/bridalveils

Bridal Trends 2009 by Lincoln Phillip

Wherever you proclaim your love, be sure to shine on your important day. Here's a look at the bridal trends in fashion for the upcoming year.

For 2009, wedding dress designers pay homage to the classics with a contemporary vision. Expect to see perfect proportions with architectural lines reminiscent of the 40's and 60's, "couture-like" cuts and finishes, as well as fluid and flowing gowns with a Grecian inspiration.

Say yes to your Lancelot in an empire gown. This high waist style tops the list for most romantics. And speaking of Camelot, a fairytale wedding needs a princess to complete the story. Look radiant in a voluminous bejewelled ball gown. Think Princess Diana or Carrie's Vivienne Westwood dream dress in the movie Sex and the City.

Key Trends: Spring 2009 is all about impacting details.

Floral Finishes - Tone-on-tone floral appliques and corsages are in full bloom this coming season. Vera Wang's over sized silk taffeta cabbage rose corsage adorns a simple neckline, while Angel Sanchez's gowns look pretty with a chiffon floral lattice. Melissa Sweet's golden appliqued bouquets add lush luxury.

Fancy Frills - Why skirt the issue of looking all out glamorous? Enzoani, Pricilla of Boston, and St.Pucci create layers of dazzling ruffles and frills at the hemlines of full-length gowns creating a modern look to these classics.

Short Skirts - Higher hemlines are perfect for casual weddings. Check out Angel Sanchez, Oscar de la Renta, and Jane Wang's sophisticated knee high creations.

Key Looks:

New Romantic - The empire dress of the Victorian era is updated this coming season. Spain's Pronovias flaunts over sized chiffon floral appliques for a picture perfect gown. Oscar de la Renta's easy white silk and chiffon strapless with contrasting white silk bow is stunning. Check out Carolina Herrera's ivory taffeta gown with off the shoulder sleeves and bustled back. Her ivory duchess satin and taffeta tuxedo vest paired with a full silk organza asymmetrical skirt and completed with an ivory top hat is sure to make any bride the centre of attention.

Grecian Goddess - Fashion forward brides follow Vera Wang, who continues to update neoclassic looks with beautifully draped silk, taupe jersey and an asymmetrical one-shoulder design that is tied at the back. Her deep v-neck halter dress in champagne silk satin is minimal yet chic. When worn with a voluminous sleeved shawl, the bride in this look becomes a fashionable Helen of Troy.

Silver Screen Elegance - Taking cues from 1960's Hollywood heroines including Elizatbeth Taylor and Sophia Lauren, Spanish designers such as Manuel Mota create a contemporary yet romantic collection. Look like a leading lady in a jewelled halter A-line gown in white silk and organza, or deep V-neck with ruffle trim on ruched silk. Take a look at Enzoani's Dakota dress - a modified trumpet with a soft sweetheart neckline finished in ivory mesh organza with cotton appliques and scalloped hemline.
